THIRD PHASE OF CAMPAIGN CONTINUES TO same coin. PROTEST IN PHARMACY DISCRIMINATORIA
Havana, July 15, 2008. Activists of the Latin American Federation of Rural Women (FLAMUR) continued with actions of civil disobedience for the third phase of the campaign with the same currency, by requiring payment in local currency in a pharmacy located in the historic center of Havana.
The action was held yesterday, July 14, by Magaly Suárez Norbis Otero Beltran and Julio Iglesias, who went to the pharmacy "The Malecón", located in Bishop Street # 260 between San Ignacio and Mercaderes in the popular area known as "The Boulevard". The activists asked to buy a bottle of medicine Omeprazole at a cost of 14 CUC (convertible pesos).
As the action began the third phase, which occurred last June at the restaurant Lava Dia when at the the time of payment activists offered to pay in local currency, and then was rejected by the person who manages the pharmacy and were thrown out by force. The activists withdrew from the site, but not before expressing their right to continue such actions in the future.
"As we expressed at the time, these actions will continue until it meets the popular will expressed by the 10,738 signatures delivered to the National Assembly, to pay at all establishments in the country with the same currency in which they pay us our salaries", said Belinda Salas, President of FLAMUR. "We refuse to be intimidated or confused about the repression."
"This demonstrates our willingness to proceed with the third phase of the campaign, and also highlights the fact that our actions reflect not sporadic or isolated incidents, but a real strategic nonviolent vision" said Magdelivia Hidalgo, International Representative for FLAMUR.
